Web Notes
An experienced lawyer, James McConnell (1829-1914) was appointed vice president of the Administrators of the Tulane Educational Fund, appointed by Paul Tulane. McConnell served as the board’s attorney, and one of his key cases in the position was the defense of Josephine Louise Newcomb’s will. McConnell was a Louisiana native, and was also involved in religious and veteran organizations of the state. He is seen here in a posthumous portrait by Tulane alum Helen M. Turner; Turner typically depicted women and lush greenery in her work, so this image of McConnell lies outside her typical oeuvre.
