Helen M. Turner
American painter
(Kentucky, 1858 - 1958, New Orleans, LA)
American impressionist Turner was born in Kentucky, but she was raised primarily by her uncle in New Orleans. Her family struggled financially following the Civil War, limiting her studies. Turner was able to access free studies at Tulane University, and she worked as a teacher to earn her way to the Art Students League in New York. She continued teaching for much of her life before one of her works was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum in 1914, opening the door for greater opportunities. Whether depicting lush greenery or interiors, Turner’s work was predominantly focused on creating portraits of women’s lives at work and leisure.
