This work is part of a series that explores the human cognition of time in an urban or crowded environment and presents a cinematic hybrid space composed of non-linear superimposed images and text written by the artist. This series of compositions is based on observation and digital montages of multiple frames shot in the same space as well as imagined short fictions. Superimposed texts draw the viewers’ eye through a universal fleeting moment in which voyeuristic life summaries or streams of consciousness are revealed within selected figures, making them accessible as characters. Using 1st and 3rd person narrative address, the imagined thoughts or meanings of a person’s life are rendered visible and staged.
This body of work considers loneliness and the social need of belonging by painting individuals with words that make them vulnerable or humorous, often taking cues from body language and other details of their appearance. In the process of creating these works, a monochromatic montage is printed and adhered to a wood surface, then painted by hand with layers of colorful oil glazes. A thick glossy resin coat is added, lending a mirror-like surface to the painting that probes interaction with the viewer, nudging contemporary notions of inter-connectivity and social media’s capacity to render portraits in the information age. They point to the alienation that can felt in screen-based and online experiences, while contrasting inner monologue with direct human connection.
