Web Notes
This print is from New Orleans artist John T. Scott’s 2003 series, Blues Poem for the Urban Landscape. Scott created these monumental prints from woodblocks that he carved with a modified chain-saw. The prints depict chaotic street scenes of degradation and confusion. Blending abstraction with realistic imagery, the prints reference urban decay and the effects of poverty that were afflicting African American communities in the early 2000’s. This imagined street scene became reality in New Orleans in 2005, after Hurricane Katrina left the city in ruins and thousands of people, Scott included, were displaced from their homes.
