John Tarrell Scott was an American printmaker and sculptor. Born in New Orleans in 1940, Scott received a B.A. from Xavier University of Louisiana in 1962 and an M.F.A. from Michigan State University in 1965. He is known for his large woodcut prints and painted metal sculptures. His work reflects Africa American and Creole cultures, and reference the movements of jazz and blues music.
Scott was the recipient of the MacArthur Genius award in 1992, and held honorary doctoral degrees from Michigan State University and Tulane University. He was a professor of Fine Arts at Xavier University for over forty years.
Scott’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans, LA; the Studio Museum in Harlem, NY; the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; the American Jazz Museum, Kansas City, MO; the Sculpture Center, Long Island City, NY; the Boston Center for the Arts, Boston, MA and the Tubman Museum in Macon, GA. In 2005, the New Orleans Museum of Art hosted a career retrospective "Circle Dance: A John T. Scott Retrospective". Scott died in Houston, TX in 2007.
