In Carolina Memory (Tidings), the artist recalls a scene from his childhood spent in Charlotte,
North Carolina, before moving to New York with his family around 1914. As neighbors converse
in the foreground, a train passes through—its movement mirrored by the birds flying overhead.
Trains, which are a common motif in Bearden’s artwork, often signify the exodus of Black
people fleeing disenfranchisement in the South.
The texture, shape, and form of Carolina Memory evoke the realities of a neighborhood shaped
by the Great Migration and the urbanization of small towns. His collages grappled with his
memories of the South and its changing landscape due to the resettling of African Americans
seeking better economic, financial, and social opportunities in the North.
