A Tulane alum and professor of fine arts at Loyola University, Karoline Schleh’s approach to art is varied and diverse, yet undeniably rooted in a unique style. Interested in the art of handwriting and the form of the world around us, Schleh’s works are experiments in the artistic power of symbols and their relationship to the elements: common imagery of smoke and clouds evoke a feeling of fogged memory and distorted perspective.

At first glance, Mississippi Writings appears burned and damaged, suggesting a tragedy has befallen it and its artist. Schleh’s usage of graphite on this watercolor-based piece speaks to a mystifying world beyond this type of tragedy, however. Is the Mississippi mentioned in the title the river which flows through the city Schleh has occupied for so long? Could the writings be a collection of thoughts and emotions, the joys and sorrows of an entire culture struck with mud and smoke? Regardless of intent, Schleh’s Mississippi Writings captures a uniquely Southern voice, and muses on the nostalgia of New Orleans and its people.
