Web Notes
Though known for his black and white photography, New Orleans artist George Dureau was also a noted illustrator. This charcoal drawing of an unknown sitter is an example of Dureau’s masterful drawing skills, demonstrating his use of composition and his ability to capture his sitter’s likeness with intimacy and grace.  Dureau worked with live models in his studio, drawing portraits on commission and within his own practice. Often his portraits featured sitters with marginalized identities, including the working class, African American men, little people and amputees.
