This drawing is a rare drawing by Lynda Benglis. The simple sketch depicts a Louisiana landscape that Benglis drew while she was a sophomore at Newcomb College.
Benglis is perhaps the best-known graduate of the Newcomb Art Department at Tulane, and her work has been widely associated with New Orleans ever since her Wave of the World fountain commission for the 1984 World’s Fair.
In past interviews, Benglis recounts her observations of nature – particularly in rugged landscapes and atmospheres that evoke fluid dynamics – as the main inspiration of her well known "pour" sculptures. This drawing is an early example of her artistic expression of landscape, which she later developed into her pioneering sculptures.
