Web Notes
Dinh’s work in porcelain honors the traditions of Chu Đậu ceramics and Annamese ware, which has been
globally traded since the Ming dynasty. Take-Out Vase offers nuance to the hand-painted blue and white
designs of Northern Vietnam by blending the high culture of fine china with the vernacular of fast-food
containers and food industry logos. The vessel’s form recalls a bottle of nail polish, symbolizing the economic
opportunity of a beauty salon. Its imagery evokes local bridges and the great distance that Vietnamese
communities have traveled, seeking refuge in places such as New Orleans East and New Orleans’ West Bank.
