Web Notes
Donte K. Hayes’ sculptures serve as modern artifacts that blend disparate
images and objects to generate new understandings.
Monument’s bulbous form recalls the material cultures within West Africa and science fiction. Deeply
considering ancestral memory, the repeated texture on the surface of the sculpture embeds a visual language
of memory, ritual, and a sense of familiarity to the viewer. The vessel is in part informed by traditional West
African pots. The work considers how, “Black people move through space and time.”
