Beloved New England poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807 – 1882) is seen here in a painting by fellow author Cecilia Viets Jamison. In addition to authoring poetry, Longfellow wrote textbooks for Spanish, Italian, and French learning; he spent a number of years in Europe studying languages and culture. Jamison met Longfellow while she studied art in Rome, and the poet supported Jamison’s own writing. Her striking portrait depicts Longfellow staring straight out at the viewer, one hand twirling through his iconic white beard. This painting was created only three years before the publication of Jamison’s first book, which Longfellow encouraged.
