Peter Voulkos was an American artist notable for helping bring the ceramic medium to prominence in fine art through his large-scale ceramic sculptures that deconstructed the vessel form. In 1978, The Newcomb Art Department Visiting Artist Program brought Voulkos to New Orleans for a four-day workshop where he demonstrated his process, discussed his work and met with students in the Department for critiques. In addition, some programs were open to alumni, including documentary film screenings of his bronze pourings, events to meet and speak with the artist and a culminating exhibition of his work in the Carroll Gallery at Tulane.

Stack was made by Voulkos during his workshop here at Tulane, held exactly 40 years ago. The work demonstrates the ability for clay to reach outside of function while maintaining some connection to use. It is also an example of innovation and experimentation inherent in all art practices, which especially resonate in an academic environment.
