Web Notes
In James DeWoody’s work, a rhythmic zig zag pattern intersects with colorfully painted paper strips that recall
military badges of rank or textiles—namely the designs of chevron quilts. DeWoody’s precise angled edges and
cut paper are hallmarks of his paintings from the 1970s and 1980s. Later into his career, DeWoody would
eventually break away from concrete formalism to incorporate figures and architecture into stenciled prints,
paintings and sculptures. Born in Arkansas and presently based in New York, he earned a BA in English and
Studio Art from Tulane University in 1967.
