Web Notes
The Bethesda Fountain in Central Park is a neo-classical sculpture designed by Emma Stebbins to
commemorate the 1842 opening of the Croton Aqueduct, which supplies New York City with its fresh water.
Bruce Davidson’s nighttime photograph of Angel of the Waters is drawn from the museum’s collection of
forty-five photographs that demonstrate Davidson’s pioneering social documentary practice as a
correspondent for Life Magazine and co-founder of Magnum Photos. The subject of this image visually recalls
statuary common to the city’s cemeteries and connects to New Orleans’s complex relationship to water
management.
