Sylvester Larned (1796-1820) served as the first minister of the First Presbyterian Church of New Orleans, beginning his services in 1818. His speaking talents made his sermons popular across the city, but Larned died of yellow fever only two years after beginning at the Church at the age of twenty-four. This portrait by an unknown artist captures a thoughtful Larned clasping his Bible; although young, the reverend was painted to appear much wiser than his years
