The Matriarchs series by Christina Molina dually contemplates the fragility of subtropical ecosystems in the US
and the intergenerational bonds among women in her family. In this photograph, an extended ”feminine” arm
reaches above and is surrounded by a bouquet of Bird of Paradise flowers, which are commonly associated
with memorials and new beginnings. Compositionally, the imagery draws from the Dutch vanitas tradition to
highlight the strength of women’s voices in periods of loss and growth.
Molina’s floral photographic still life adds complexity to the collection’s archive of paintings and drawings that
document art studio lessons at Newcomb College in the early 20th century. Her work also expands the
museum’s research on three major themes of the collection: gender and sexuality, the decorative arts, and the
natural environment.
