Lost New Orleans: Photographs By Theodore Lilienthal for Emperor Napoleon III

Photographs of notable buildings and landmarks commissioned by the City of New Orleans for exhibition at the Louisiana Pavilion at the Paris World’s Fair of 1867. The purpose was twofold: to give Parisians a view of their sister city and to show Europeans that post-Civil War New Orleans was ready for immigrants, investments and international commerce. The portfolio was later presented to the Emperor Napoleon III and eventually taken to the Emperor’s family castle (now the Napoleon Museum) in Arenenberg, Switzerland. Exhibited outside of Switzerland for the first time.
