David Smith: Two Into Three Dimensions
Completed
Nov 30, 2000 – Feb 25, 2001
This exhibition focused on the relationship that exists between painting and sculpture and how Smith, celebrated as America’s greatest sculptor, reconciled these differing media in his work. The show included dynamic paintings, drawings and mixed media reliefs along with metal sculpture from throughout Smith’s career. Special focus was given to Medals for Dishonor, a series of cast bronze medals depicting the devastation of war, ignorance, prejudice, poverty, illness and environmental destruction.
