Alice Raymond Scudder was born in New Orleans on July 2, 1881. Scudder had an intermittent career at Newcomb College beginning in 1899 as a Special Art student. A talented pottery decorator, she received a Diploma and Bachelor of Art in 1901 and 1911, respectively. Scudder also studied at the School of Applied Design for Women in New York. During her career, she was a student of William Merritt Chase and F. Luis Mora. Alice Raymond Scudder Coates died on March 5, 1957 in Pasadena, California.
