Ida Kohlmeyer
American 20th Century Painings, sculpture, prints, mixed media
(New Orleans, LA, 1912 - 1997, New Orleans, LA)

Ida Renee Rittenberg Kohlmeyer (b. 1912, New Orleans, LA; d. 1997, New Orleans, LA) was a painter, sculptor, printmaker, and teacher. Having discovered a passion for art relatively late in life, she pursued a master’s degree in fine arts from her alma mater, Newcomb College. During the early half of her career, she created paintings characterized by fluid lines and biomorphic shapes. Her personal style was distinguished by her use of grids to develop geometric abstractions and hieroglyph-like symbols meant to be interpreted differently by each viewer. In the late 1980s, her work shifted to a less rigid, geometric style with greater emphasis on color. Her sculptures varied in size from small, vibrantly colored Plexiglas and wood pieces to monumental pieces made of metal.
