Moses Soyer

Russian-born Soyer immigrated to New York in 1912, where he received his artistic training. His education at Ferrer Art School in Harlem allowed him to work with the Ashcan school artists, who focused on gritty and realistic depictions of city life in New York. In the 1930s, Soyer was commissioned by the Works Progress Administration to paint murals in government buildings, allowing Soyer to continue painting the every day. Soyer continued his realist style even though the postwar periods of abstract art, and he was eventually elected to both the National Academy of Design and the National Institute of Arts and Letters.
