Mazie Teresa Ryan
Newcomb College Newcomb Ceramicist

Mazie Theresa Ryan was a Newcomb Pottery decorator who also worked in metalwork and embroidery. Born in New Orleans, September 19, 1877, Ryan entered the Normal Art Program during the 1896–97 session, graduating in 1899. Enrolled in the Graduate Art program this same year, she is listed in the Pottery Design class from 1901 to 1906. She joined the Art Craftsmen from 1910 through 1914. Her talents were varied- other than pottery, she also worked in embroidery, and made pierced brass and beaded lampshade and glass fire screens.
A letter in her own hand to the Delgado Museum, dated October 20, 1938, says: " Did much handmade pottery and became an independent designer of pottery. Made the piece of pottery now on display in the Delgado Art Museum between 1903-05. Interested in all art work including architecture and embroidery. Received travelling scholarship 1903 for pottery. Studied from life under George W. Maynard in the National School of Design, Columbia University, New York."
On February 5, 1920, Ryan married Donald Eugene McDonald and the couple moved to Pass Christian, Mississippi, shortly thereafter. Mazie Theresa Ryan McDonald died in her home on July 31, 1946, in Pass Christian, Mississippi.
