Marie-Jeanne Amelie Roman
Newcomb College Newcomb Ceramicist
(New Orleans, LA, 1873 - 1955)
Amelie Marie-Jeanne Roman was an artist and teacher at Newcomb College.
Born in New Orleans on December 2, 1873, Roman was one of the nine members of the first class in pottery decoration in 1895. She received her Diploma in Art in 1896 and was a graduate art student from 1900-1902. She received the hundred and twenty five dollar traveling scholarship for the Dow Summer School at Ipswich, Massachusetts in 1901.
Her teaching service at Newcomb College began on October 1, 1900 and she taught drawing and design until 1904. From 1904-1907 she was an instructor of drawing and from 1907 to 1939 she was an assistant professor of drawing and design.
Hattie C. Joor said of her ""There is much charming color and a graceful poetic fancy in the design of Miss Amelie Roman."" She developed into more of a teacher of art than a producer, but some of the best work still bears her initials."
