Elizabeth Goelet Rogers was a member of the first class in pottery decoration at Newcomb College in 1895. Born in New Orleans on February 27, 1871, Rogers received a Diploma in Art in 1900, and she immediately entered the Graduate Art program for the 1900–02 sessions. Identified by Harriet Joor as the first student to devise Newcomb’s pierced brass lampshade, Elizabeth Goelet Rogers was a multitalented artist who also distinguished herself in bookplate design and metalwork. In 1911, Rogers, now married, had a baby girl who was born with special needs. Her daughter died in 1924 at thirteen years old. Never quite the same after her daughter’s death, Elizabeth Goelet Rogers Palfrey died on August 2, 1933.
