George Rickey (b. 1907, South Bend, IN; d. 2002, Saint Paul, MN) was a painter, muralist, and sculptor who taught at Tulane University from 1955 to 1962. He is known for the creation of precisely calibrated sculptures. Designed to be situated in the public sphere, his works are activated by their interplay with the surrounding environment, reshaping the landscape and bringing heightened attention to aspects of light, movement, and composition. During World War II, he experimented with Calder-esque mobiles and then “little machines.” While his sculptures’ movement stems from the interplay of wind currents and the environment, the speed of their gesture is tempered by a fixed arrangement of spatial elements. In his compositions, the relationship among parts remains constant, even when propelled into motion spontaneously.
