Paul Poincy
(New Orleans, LA, 1833 - 1909, New Orleans, LA)
Born in New Orleans, Paul Poincy was trained as a portrait and genre painter throughout the American south, as well as in Paris, where he studied Old Master works at the Louvre. Upon his return to New Orleans, Poincy opened his own studio on Royal St. His portrait paintings were well-received, and his career was secured by a painting completed for the Jesuit church. In the 1860s, Poincy served in the Civil War with the Confederate Army. Following the war, Poincy collaborated on larger scale works, and he later helped found the Artists’ Association of New Orleans.
