Andres Molinary
(Gibraltar, 1847 - 1915, New Orleans, LA)
Andres Molinary was born in Gibraltar and traveled extensively before settling in New Orleans at the age of twenty-nine. During these travels through Europe and Africa, Molinary studied at a number of art schools, and upon settling in New Orleans, he set up his own studio. He painted a number of landscapes and genre scenes, but he was a particularly skilled portrait painter, and he painted a number of prominent families and local figures. Molinary was extremely involved in the local art community, exhibiting throughout the city and providing resources for other artists; he founded the Southern Art Union and the Artists’ Association of New Orleans, among others.
