Miriam Flora Levy was a Newcomb craftsman who specialized in metalwork and jewelry. Born September 29, 1895 in Franklin, Louisiana, she entered Newcomb College as a freshman in 1913. Graduating in 1916 with a Diploma in Art, and 1918 as a Graduate Art student, Levy worked at Newcomb Pottery from 1918 to 1940. At the same time, she also worked as a teacher in the Orleans Paris Public School system, and did commissions out of her in-home studio.
As an artist, she made constant contributions to both local and national exhibitions. She won first prize in jewelry exhibited at the National Alliance of Art and Industry, as well a prize in a national contest conducted by the luxury watch designer Cartier. In 1937 Levy went to work for Hausmann's in Downtown New Orleans, designing handmade jewelry. She served as assistant manager at the store for nineteen years. Levy designed chalices for the Episcopalian Eucharistic Congress, and, during the Depression years, worked as an Assistant Supervisor of Metalwork for the National Youth Administration, a division of the W.P.A. Her other memberships included the New Orleans Art Association, the Arts and Crafts Club and the Boston Arts and Crafts Club.
Miriam Flora Levy died on August 11, 1975.
