Katharine Kopman
Newcomb College Newcomb Ceramicist

Katherine Kopman was born in New Orleans on December 7, 1869. She received a Diploma in Art in June 1895 and became a member of the first pottery decoration class in the fall of that same year. She is listed as a Graduate Art student from 1896–1898 while also being appointed instructor of drawing for the Special and Normal Art classes. She taught art at Newcomb High School from 1910-1911, and in 1913 she was made Supervisor of Practice at Newcomb College, responsible for both special and Normal students. Kopman became an art teacher at Louisiana College in 1914, and in 1918 she became Supervisor of Art at Alexandria Grammar School in Alexandria, Louisiana. Kopman remained an active artist during her teaching career. She exhibited pottery at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco and a series of Red Cross posters in November of 1917.
Katherine Kopman died in Biloxi, Mississippi on March 11, 1950.
