Deane Keller received an arts degree from Yale in 1926, and following a three-year fellowship in Rome, taught painting and drawing at the university until 1970. During World War II, Keller served as a fine-arts officer in Italy, where he was responsible for the identification and transportation of artworks in Tuscany; he received the Legion of Merit, the Member of the British Empire medal and the Order of St. John Lateran from the Vatican for his service. Keller was known for producing many important portraits of academicians and politicians, including that of Senator Robert A. Taft that hangs in the Senate reception chamber at the Capitol in Washington. -- Excerpt from New York Times
