Chester Harding
(1792 - 1866)
American painter Chester Harding was born in Conway, Massachusetts on September 1, 1792. Enthralled by portraiture during his career as a house painter, Harding began to explore this field through self-instruction and direction from several renowned portraitists. Harding’s adoption of portraiture can be attributed to the rise of portrait art in 18th and 19th century New England.
Upon gaining notoriety, Harding was commissioned to paint portraits of numerous prominent American and English figures, most notably Daniel Boone, James Madison, Daniel Webster, and within Newcomb’s Collection, Chief Justice Marshall. Harding continued to paint until a year before his death on April 1, 1866.
