Debra Howell
(Cheltenham, PA, 1957 – )
Debra Howell is an artist known for her digital montages of interior and exterior residential spaces, working primarily with photographs and mixed media lightworks. In her words: “Like many artists, I use my artmaking as a way to explain the unexplainable; to investigate the mysteries of life through art, to reconcile myself to the world by making sense of it and exerting some control over it; and to weave the selected fictions of truth and memory that surround us into peculiar but acceptable reality, which has always been and always will be a very subjective concept.” She has been represented by LeMieux Galleries, Bienville Gallery, and Hall-Barnett Gallery in New Orleans. Howell earned a BA from Bryn Mawr College in 1979 and an MFA in Printmaking from Tulane in 1983. That following year she became a co-founding member of The Vestiges Project with Jan Gilbert and Kristen Struebing-Beazley and began many collaborative initiatives with invited writers and guests. Her work has garnered many awards and in 2005, she was chosen as the 'Collector's Club' print artist by the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans.
