Shirley Austin Teunisson was a Newcomb artist specializing in Jewelry. Born in New Orleans on May 3, 1911, Teunission attended Newcomb College from 1928–1932, earning a Bachelor of Art degree. She was the recipient of the Mary Palfrey Memorial Prize in Jewelry. Teunisson enrolled in the Graduate art program in fall 1932 and taught jewelry design at Newcomb’s summer school for teachers. She began her employment at the New Orleans’ department store, D. H. Holmes Co. in the late 1930s, working in the advertising department and making specialty jewelry items. She also worked as an artist for the New Orleans’ Times Picayune newspaper. Shirley Austin Teunisson died in New Orleans on October 23, 2004, at the age of 93.
