Charles Henry Reinike was an American artist working in Louisiana. He was a genre painter working primarily in watercolor. His work typically depicted rural Louisiana landscapes or New Orleans street scenes.
Born 1906 in New Orleans, Reinike studied art at the Arts and Crafts Club of New Orleans and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago. He worked professionally as an artist in New Orleans, and as a mural painter for the WPA Federal Art Project. His wife, German artist Vera Hefter, was also a muralist in New Orleans.
Reinike was one of the founding members of the New Orleans Arts League, and in 1930 he started his own art school, the New Orleans School of Commercial Art, (later renamed the Reinike Academy of Art). He also hosted his own radio show on art theory.
Reinike’s work is in several notable collections, including the Louisiana State Museum; the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans; the Smithsonian Institution; and the Mint Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Reinike died in New Orleans on October 27, 1983.
