Ella Miriam Wood was an American painter. Born February 18, 1888, in Birmingham, Alabama, Wood graduated in 1908 from Newcomb College with a Diploma in Art. She entered the Graduate Art program in 1910. Her area of specialization was painting, and was awarded the Fannie Estelle Holley Memorial Medal for proficiency in watercolor painting. Wood was especially fond of doing portraits of children and composed the book “Notes on Portraits through the Years”. In her early days she traveled to other towns to stay ten days to do family portraits. One of her more famous is that of Andrew Wyeth’s firstborn son, Nicholas.
In addition to her portraits, she was an accomplished muralist who also did Carnival designs and painted wildlife backgrounds for museum dioramas. One of the outstanding designs is that for the Union Indemnity Company sign “Sturdy as the Oak”. Another is a mural for the permanent International Trade Exhibition in New Orleans.
Ella Miriam Wood spent her last years as a resident of St. Anna’s Home in New Orleans. She died on December 7, 1976 after a brief illness; she was 88 years old.
