Bror Anders Wikstrom
(April 14, 1854 - April 27, 1909, New York City)
A former sailor and immigrant, Bror Anders Wikstrom emerged as a pioneering New Orleans artist. Arriving from Sweden in 1883, he is best remembered as a designer for elaborate Carnival productions and Mardi Gras float designs. Wikstrom, however, was not confined to one medium: he created numerous paintings, sketches, cartoons, etchings, and even furniture. He is also credited as a founding artist, teacher, and eventual president of the Artists’ Association of New Orleans.
