Lynne Watkins
Newcomb College Newcomb Ceramicist

Lynne Watkins was born February 3, 1887, and graduated from the Normal Art program at Newcomb College in 1908. She was a member of the first unified graduation at Tulane University; the ceremony took place in the old French Opera House. Listed as a Graduate Art student from 1909–1910, she abandoned an art career for marriage. Between 1923 and 1929, her family developed Middlegate Japanese gardens in Pass Christian, Mississippi, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The landscape was furnished with Japanese antiquities from the family travels through the Asia. The Oriental style buildings were constructed under the supervision of noted New Orleans architect, Rathbone deBuys.
Lynne Watkins Hecht and her husband permanently moved to Pass Christian in 1953. She died there in 1961.
